With its involvement in the replacement of a historically important school building, Scott & Ewing Ltd has come full circle.
The plumbing and heating company was entrusted with the mechanical installation at Enniskillen Model Primary School, a Grade B1 listed building which first opened its doors to pupils in 1867. The new two-storey build comprises of 14 classrooms, and integrates the former red brick schoolhouse, latterly used as offices, into the design.
Significantly, this is not the first time that Scott & Ewing Ltd has helped breathe new life into this particular school – having also installed the plumbing when the building was originally upgraded five decades ago.
The new build, completed by main contractor Woodvale Construction (Scott & Ewing Ltd’s associate company), retains the essential character of the original school, while also transforming it into a modern, vibrant facility fit for future generations of pupils and staff.
Raymond Scott, Contract Manager for the project, said: “The old Model School, completed in 1975, was my first major project as foreman with Scott & Ewing Ltd, so to be involved in its replacement almost 50 years later is a nice way to complete the circle. I wish all staff and pupils success and happiness in their magnificent new school environment.”
Underfloor heating is utilised in the new build element of the school, while low surface temperature (LST) radiators are used in the existing former schoolhouse.
Natural gas powers the new development, bringing into use the latest condensing boiler and hot water generation technology, all controlled by user friendly BMS controls.
The mechanical services have been designed and installed to a ‘BREEAM Very Good’ accreditation.
The delivery of this project comes on the back of Scott & Ewing Ltd’s completion of two Design & Build schools– St Patrick’s PS in Belfast’s New Lodge area, and Holy Evangelists’ PS, Dunmurry. As was the case with those schemes, the installation at Enniskillen Model PS presented was not without its challenges.
Due to it being a listed building, the distribution of pipework required careful consideration to ensure all new services were consistent and sympathetic to the Victorian era design. The project timeframe was also impacted by the pandemic, with Public Health guidelines necessitating a site lockdown. The return to work required careful planning and implementation of Covid safe work practices, social distancing, and enhanced sanitisation.
Principal of Enniskillen Model PS, Winston Glass, praised Scott & Ewing Ltd’s work on the project, stating: “I have no hesitation in stating that Scott & Ewing Ltd put the interests of the whole school community to the forefront and delivered a project of the highest standard. There is no doubt that there were periods of stress due to unforeseen problems, not least the outbreak of COVID -19, however Scott & Ewing Ltd remained open-minded and understanding of the school pressures and they worked tirelessly to support us throughout. They were a pleasure to work alongside throughout.”
