Rossmar Special School, Co Derry

Thomas Hanna & Co Ltd delivers full mechanical installation...

The less than perfect learning environment at the existing Rossmar Special School, Limavady spurred on Thomas Hanna & Co Ltd and the rest of the project team to deliver an extra special new building for the student and teaching body.
The project involved the provision of a £10m new build 5,500 sqm replacement school for 110 disabled children and children with special educational needs, incorporating nursery, primary and post-primary classrooms, care facilities, sports hall, associated support rooms, changing rooms, external stores and green houses.
The new building incorporates three wings: Wing A – nursery and primary; Wing B – multi-purpose hall, school meals accommodation and classrooms for home economics, art, science and music; Wing C- secondary level to age 19.
Works were carried-out in phases, in accordance with the architect’s site phasing drawings and the main contractor’s programme of works.

Thomas Hanna & Co Ltd were responsible for the full mechanical installation package: domestic water services, rain water harvesting, mechanical ventilation systems, space and water heating, above ground drainage, sanitary ware, building management system, compressed air, air conditioning, specialised assisted equipment and gas installations.
The County Fermanagh-based firm employed the knowledge of over
50-plus years working in all sectors of the industry on this project. Martin Hanna, Managing Director of Thomas Hanna & Co Ltd explains, “Following our initial review, particular care and supervision were implemented regarding the specific project related constraints highlighted in the Mott MacDonald specification and drawings e.g. height and weight limitations, spatial co-ordination, acoustics etc. Detailed coordination meetings and early submittal of our site services allowed us to program our installation accordingly.

Co-operation
“This project was reliant upon co-operation and delivery through our supply chain members,” continues Martin. “Our mechanical services programme was a key point of reference that was used for reviewing progress during our fortnightly supply chain meetings. Within such forums we could ensure that programme dates were being achieved or highlight delays that may have been incurred. We could then review and if necessary realign labour and resources to capture any time lost with no impact on the quality of the installed services.”
The project was not without its challenges, however, admits Martin. “During the construction programme an addition of three extensions to the existing school footprint to facilitate additional classrooms with associated child specific requirements were added to the overall project. Working closely with our design consultants Mott MacDonald, amendments to the original design were implemented to enable the required alterations to be carried out with minimal impact to the existing installed services allowing a seamless integration to the overall project.
“Our team successfully delivered the mechanical services to Rossmar Special School, which brings Thomas Hanna & Co Ltd to over 45 new build educational projects – our fourth partnering with Glasgiven Contracts.”

Gas Fired Combination boilers

Tank-in-Tank combination boilers PROVIDE performance and efficiency with a space saving design…

C&F Quadrant supplied ACV Heatmaster TC gas fired combination boilers to Rossmar Special School.
As one of Ireland’s most respected distributors, C&F Quadrant have built a well-known reputation for providing customers with high quality, innovative products and the range of ACV HeatMaster TC boilers proves to be no exception to this rule.
Using over 90 years of manufacturing experience, ACV have developed a product with the installer and end user in mind. When it comes to performance, energy saving and space saving, the benefits of a Tank-in-Tank system outperforms a traditional coil installation on almost every occasion.
HeatMaster TC boilers have been successfully installed for many years in schools, hospitals and sports centres. The range not only features exceptional efficiency but is designed to cope with the hot water demands of larger buildings, which is why it was first choice for the Rossmar Special School project. This means superb mains pressure hot water delivery, which is unrivalled in a boiler of this output, giving high volumes, fast recovery times and quick response to demand.
These exceptional hot water outputs include in excess of 40-litres-per minute. In fact, the HeatMaster TC is actually the only storage combination boiler to fully condense during the hot water and heating modes. The secret to this success is the specially designed new stainless steel heat exchanger.
The combustion gases pass downwards through the heat exchanger tubes and condense in the lower circuit of the HeatMaster TC, making maximum use of the energy available from the combustion process. The result is a highly efficient combination boiler which gives exceptional output for its size.

• Six outputs from 25kW to 120kW
• Stainless steel heat exchanger
• Combination direct fire heating and hot water unit
• Condenses in heating and hot water mode – up to 99% efficiency
• High Performance DHW – almost 2,000 litres of hot water in the first hour @ 60C
• Small Footprint 0.5m2 – High output
• Fast recovery – from 10C to 80C in 23 minutes (HM120TC)
• Anti Leigonella due to high storage temperature
• Unrivalled resistance to scale
